The Blue Monster will be off the PGA Tour calendar in 2017 after a 54-year run.
Many expected that the tour could move away from Trump National Doral in Florida after the 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship (won by Adam Scott), as Cadillac decided not to renew its deal as the tournament's title sponsor, and Trump confirmed the news himself on Fox News Tuesday. Trump said that the move "is so sad when you look at what's going on with our country."
Via the Golf Channel:
"I mean, I just heard that the PGA Tour is taking their tournament out of Miami and moving it to Mexico as an example. They're taking it - it's at Doral, it's at - they used one of my places. They're moving their tournament, it's the Cadillac World Golf Championship. And Cadillac's been a great sponsor, but they're moving it to Mexico. They're moving it to Mexico City which, by the way, I hope they have kidnapping insurance."
The PGA Tour is leaving Doral for the Club de Golf Chapultapec in Mexico, according to the Golf Channel.
World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship chairman Butch Buchholz told the Miami Herald that the PGA Tour "didn't have a choice" in the matter.
"I believe they are sincere when they said they didn't want to leave an event with a 54 year history. They've got an obligation to their board and they couldn't find a sponsor so they had to move. They don't have a choice. The PGA Tour didn't have a choice, If you don't have a sponsor what can you do?"
The PGA Tour publicly denounced Trump for his remarks on Mexican immigrants in 2015 and canceled an event that was set to be held at Trump National Los Angeles. Trump National Golf Club is scheduled to host the 2022 PGA Championship.
